If you’ve read how I met Pharoah Chromium, you remember that I did the mixing of GDC 2 in Berlin last year at Guillaume’s Neukölln studio. The process took a week and left me very little time to do local things like go to Alex or record shopping. On the last day, I had finalized 99% of the album thanks to rainy weather and super healthy food cooked by Guillaume.
So, I decided that it was time for a break, enjoy the returned sunshine and go to Hardwax. After a nice Indian dish, we passed by a synth shop Guillaume had mentioned: Patch point.
I only wanted to check the e-kalimba. I loved the sound of it, but it wasn’t available. Contrary to that strange piece of wood next to the e-kalimba that roared strangely every time my hand got near.
It was a Ciat-Lonbarde Deerhorn.
It wasn’t reasonable, but having finalized such an enormous project, I felt I deserved a reward.
In case you wonder, the answer is 'yes, of course I bought a couple of records at Hardwax, does that count as a reward???'.
The Deerhorn has everything I like in a synth: it is totally impossible to control, it has unlimited tuning options, and it forces you to adapt to its logic. There should be a better word.
Just like the Persephone or the Grendel Drone Commander, you’ll only produce horrible sounds, until you give up wanting to control it.
You don't play it, it plays you.
